A dangerous criminal network operating across Tenerife has been completely dismantled by the Guardia Civil, who have arrested eight people as part of Operation SCRUM-MONÉ.
The gang specialised in violent robberies, often disguising themselves as members of the Guardia Civil to gain access to homes and vehicles before carrying out their crimes.
According to officials, the group conducted meticulous surveillance on their targets in advance, allowing them to strike quickly and efficiently. They focused primarily on isolated homes and money transport vehicles, stealing over €290,000 in total.
"Full Police" Tactics and Violence
One of the group’s more sinister methods was the so-called "full police" technique, involving the use of clothing and insignia that closely mimicked official Guardia Civil uniforms. This deception gave them an air of legitimacy, enabling them to approach victims unsuspected before turning violent if necessary.
In several instances, the gang resorted to physical assault and intimidation to secure their loot. The group's activities extended to robberies in residential properties, as well as the hijacking of cash-in-transit vehicles, often in remote areas where witnesses and police response would be limited.
Timeline of the Investigation
- September 2024: A violent break-in was reported at a private home in El Sauzal. The swift response from Guardia Civil officers led to a dramatic chase through nearby mountains. Two suspects were apprehended at the scene despite one of them threatening officers with a firearm.
- November 2024: A van transporting over €50,000 was intercepted and stolen. Two suspects fled to a secure property in the south of Tenerife. One was captured shortly afterwards, and both the vehicle and the full amount of money were recovered.
- February 2025: Another suspect, wanted on five outstanding warrants, was arrested following continuous surveillance of known associates.
- June 2025: The final fugitive was located and detained. He was also wanted for attempted homicide and had been using multiple false identities and encrypted communication to avoid detection.
Charges and Sentencing
With all eight members now in custody, the gang faces a lengthy list of charges, including:
- Robbery with violence
- Illegal detention (ie holding people against their will)
- Aggravated burglary
- Impersonation of public officials
Authorities recovered a substantial amount of stolen money, five vehicles, a number of electronic devices, and fake Guardia Civil gear such as uniforms, vests, logos, and identification badges.
Six of the eight suspects have already been remanded in custody, while the remaining two await judicial proceedings. Some of those arrested were repeat offenders, previously convicted in a similar Guardia Civil operation back in 2022.
Coordinated Police Effort
The investigation was led by the Judicial Police Unit of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, particularly the Property Crime Division. Officers from Puerto de la Cruz, Playa de las Américas, and other divisions under the island’s command post also took part in the operation.
Authorities praised the success of the coordinated operation, calling it a significant step in protecting local communities from highly organised, violent criminal activity.
Residents and tourists alike are reminded to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious behaviour, particularly involving individuals claiming to be law enforcement.
