Some dreams never fade, no matter how many years go by. For Juan, born and bred in Madrid, it took 100 years, but his long-held wish to visit the Canary Islands has finally come true in spectacular fashion.
Juan had always dreamed of feeling the volcanic sand under his feet, breathing in the Atlantic breeze, and tasting the unique flavours of Canarian cuisine. Thanks to a heartwarming wave of support, that dream has become a reality.
The non-profit organisation Adopta Un Abuelo (Adopt a Grandfather) launched a campaign after learning about Juan’s wish, and hundreds of people came together to make it happen. True to their motto, “dreams have no age”, supporters raised funds to send Juan on an unforgettable trip to Gran Canaria.
What followed was far more than a simple holiday. It became a once-in-a-lifetime adventure filled with emotional moments, surprises, and the kindness of strangers.
First Time Seeing the Atlantic
Arriving in Maspalomas, Juan stood in awe as he saw the Atlantic Ocean for the very first time. The vast blue horizon, golden dunes, and warm Canarian sun made for a magical scene. And, of course, he fully embraced the local gastronomy, sampling iconic dishes like gofio, papas arrugadas, and mojo picón.
But the surprises didn’t stop there.
A VIP Football Experience
The UD Las Palmas football club invited Juan to one of their home matches, where he was treated as a special guest. Cheering from the stands, he even had the chance to meet former players and was presented with an official team shirt bearing his name, gifted by the club’s president.
“This is the greatest thing that could happen to me,” Juan said with a wide smile, deeply moved by the gesture. His simple but heartfelt words, “I love you all”, touched everyone who shared in his journey.
Thanks to everyone who made it possible, Juan didn’t just visit the Canary Islands; he experienced the warmth, generosity, and sense of community that defines them. In helping Juan achieve his dream, his supporters created memories that will stay with him, and with them, forever.
Because when dreams are shared, they don't just come true — they grow.
