The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has reported an earthquake of 2.7 magnitude off the coast of San Miguel de Abona, in the south of Tenerife, that was felt by the population in parts of the island.
The tremor occurred at 3:15am yesterday morning (Wednesday), at a depth of 19 kilometres. According to the IGN, it was felt by residents in Los Abriguitos (Arico) and San Miguel, registering intensities of I–II on a scale of X.
This means there were no reports of damage or falling objects, and the quake was only noticed in isolated cases.
While seismic activity is not unusual in the Canary Islands due to their volcanic origin, experts confirm that small tremors of this type are generally harmless and form part of the natural geological processes of the region.
