A 9-year-old boy is in critical condition after experiencing a near-drowning incident yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) at La Pinta Beach in Costa Adeje, in the south of Tenerife, according to information provided by the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES).
The incident occurred at 6:04pm, which is when the 112 emergency hotline received a call from a lifeguard reporting that a child needed medical assistance after being rescued from the sea.
A doctor on holiday, who happened to be on the beach, provided initial aid before the arrival of emergency services, who found the young boy in a critical condition and decided to take him straight to hospital where he is receiving treatment. According to reports the child's condition remains serious, and medical staff are continuing to provide care and monitor his progress.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of water safety, especially for children. Beachgoers are urged to exercise caution and to adhere to the instructions and warnings provided by lifeguards and flags to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
