Storm Therese forced the cancellation of 26 flights and the diversion of a further seven yesterday, Wednesday 18th March, according to airport operator AENA. Most are local inter-island flights, but some incoming international flights have been affected as well.
The adverse weather conditions are significantly impacting normal flight schedules, and further delays, diversions, or cancellations cannot be ruled out over the next few days.
Airports affected across the islands
At El Hierro Airport, one flight arriving from Tenerife North was forced to turn back and return to its departure airport due to poor weather conditions.
Meanwhile, La Palma Airport has also seen multiple disruptions. A flight from Madrid was diverted to Tenerife South, while other incoming services from Frankfurt and Zurich were rerouted to Gran Canaria and Tenerife South respectively.
Disruption spreads to Gran Canaria
At Gran Canaria Airport, a flight from Cologne had to be diverted to Fuerteventura. In addition, two other flights — one departing from Fuerteventura and another from Barcelona — were also redirected to Tenerife South.
Ongoing uncertainty for travellers
Authorities warn that the situation remains fluid as Storm Therese continues to affect the islands, with strong winds and heavy rain creating hazardous flying conditions.
Passengers are advised to check with their airlines before travelling and allow extra time when heading to the airport.
