A 19-year-old man is in critical condition after being rescued from a hotel swimming pool in Playa Las Americas in the south of Tenerife yesterday afternoon, Saturday 26th July.

The incident occurred at around 5:10pm at a complex on Avenida Rafael Puig Lluvina in the centre of Las Americas, where the young man was pulled unconscious from the water by a lifeguard who started to try and revive him.

He had gone into cardiac arrest due to the amount of water he swallowed, and showed signs of severe drowning.

Emergency services were quickly alerted via 1-1-2 and responded with a medicalised ambulance and a basic life support unit from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), as well as officers from the National and Local Police.

Paramedics continued advanced CPR efforts, that were first initiated by the lifeguard, and managed to resuscitate him. After being stabilised at the pool, the victim was transported in critical condition to Hospiten Sur for further treatment.

Police worked alongside emergency crews to assist at the scene. No further details regarding his condition or identity have been released at this time.
