13-year-old girl dies after fall inside abandoned hotel building in Tenerife
A 13-year-old girl tragically died yesterday afternoon, Thursday, after falling several floors inside the notorious abandoned building known as the “Mamotreto de Añaza” on the coast of Tenerife.
Local Police confirmed that the teenager, who lived in the Añaza area, had entered the fenced-off structure with three friends. The group raised the alarm immediately after the fall.
CECOES dispatched the necessary emergency resources, and Police officers were first to arrive and attempted to resuscitate her, but sadly couldn’t save her life, and SUC paramedics confirmed her death.
Authorities say the exact circumstances are still under investigation by the National Police Homicide Unit, but initial reports suggest the girl may have fallen from as high as the fifth floor.
A dangerous site with a tragic history
The unfinished hotel building, abandoned for decades, has long been a source of concern for local residents. Despite being fenced off, young people frequently manage to enter to explore, practise extreme sports or perform risky stunts such as parkour.
This is now the fifth known fatality linked to the structure. In 2017 neighbours reported that at least four people had already died there — three in accidents and one in a suspected suicide. Residents have repeatedly warned about the open lift shafts and exposed drops that make the building extremely hazardous.
In recent years, there have been several dangerous incidents, including a woman who threatened to jump from the 13th floor in 2022 and thrill-seekers leaping between exposed balconies in 2020.
Demolition planned — but not yet carried out
In June this year, the Santa Cruz City Council and the Cabildo agreed a subsidy to finally demolish the structure. Locals have been pushing for action for years, saying the risks are obvious and growing.
As the investigation continues, the community of Añaza has been left in shock, mourning the loss of another young life at a site many believe should have been removed long ago.
