Two injured paragliders die from their injuries after crash in Tenerife

Two paragliders who suffered a freak accident this morning (Sunday) in the take-off area in Izaña in Las Cañadas del Teide while going for a routine tandem flight, have unfortunately died due to their injuries, according to a press release from the Emergency Services Coordinating Centre (Cecoes)

They received an urgent call at 10.10am which alerted of the crash of a two-seater paraglider in the take-off area in Izaña. From that moment the helicopter of the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES), Guardia Civil, personnel of the Teide National Park, Cecopin, Tenerife Firefighters and Civil Protection were activated.

The GES helicopter located and rescued both of the injured men and transferred them to the main road where an SUC ambulance and a medicalized helicopter were waiting to attend to them. Paramedics immediately rushed into action as both men were in cardiorespiratory arrest, but despite the manoeuvres practised by the health workers, they couldn’t save them and both died from their injuries.

According to the Ministry of Health, one of the deceased is a resident doctor at the Family and Community Medicine Centre of the Tenerife North Teaching Unit, called Omar Dehni al Mahmoud, they confirmed in a tweet.

Following the accident, the police have taken over the investigation into how the accident happened, including studying GoPro footage that the pilot had recorded of their take-off.
