A tragic accident in Playa Blanca last night (Monday) has resulted in the death of a 5-month-old baby and several others injured, two of them seriously after a car ploughed into them on a pavement in Playa Blanca.

According to reports by the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) a group of English holidaymakers were struck by a vehicle on Avenida Archipelago at approximately 6:20pm as they were walking down the road, by a driver who lost control of her car.

CECOES immediately dispatched the necessary emergency resources to the location given and upon arrival, paramedics could only confirm the tragic death of the young baby.

Two women in serious condition were transported by ambulance to intensive care at the hospital in Arrecife and by helicopter to a hospital in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for urgent treatment. Three others, who sustained moderate injuries, were treated at the scene before being taken for routine observation.

The Police are currently investigating the accident but it is still too early to know the full details. Everything indicates that the driver, who has been tested for drugs and alcohol, lost control of the car because she was going too fast, although some sources say she swerved because the road was blocked in front of her, subsequently mounting the pavement and hitting the group of people and iron fences.
